My Students

My students are amazing! I have to admit that even after 25 years of teaching, I’m still learning from them every day. I am a special education teacher in a class of 12 3rd-5th grade students. I teach in a trauma-informed classroom where we not only teach, but also support self-regulation and building relationships.

A trauma-sensitive classroom is where the teacher understands trauma’s impact on brain development and how that manifests itself in the child’s behavior.

A trauma-sensitive approach means you recognize where the children are at emotionally through how they behave and then you meet their social and emotional needs. It is important that all students feel safe, welcomed, and supported. We provide an environment where children from “hard places” can be successful, involved learners. I want them to know I care and that I will always find a safe space where they can retreat and calm down.

My students are inquisitive, thoughtful, and attentive and they need adults in their lives that help them heal and grow. After all, if a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.

My Project

Sensory items will allow my students to focus on learning throughout the day or to take calming breaks to ease anxiety when needed. Some students need visual stimuli to create a mesmerizing effect so I have chosen liquid motion bubblers which have slow-moving bubbles that help a student to refocus. Other students enjoy a pleasant sound to reduce stress and this will be accomplished with the rainmaker toy. Of course, tactile sensory tools are abundant in this DonorsChoose project. Using hands-on manipulation is therapeutic for children to create a peaceful attitude which in turn creates a person who is ready to learn.

The sensory items I am requesting are essential in the lives of my students with special needs.

These students have a constant need for sensory stimulation to deal with anxiety which can have a negative effect on their learning and functioning as young learners. Please help me give my students these incredible toys to aid in their educational development.
