My Students

Generosity is built into our community. Former students and community members donate used instruments to our program every year. However, when a used instrument worth $300 would cost $500 to repair, it is not a good deal for us. That has been happening recently and our inventory needs an upgrade.

Ours is a four-year high school with a 100+ year tradition of instrumental music.

Students in band and orchestra have the option of choosing from two levels of each. We also have an award-winning jazz big band, a marching/pep band and a thriving choir and drama program. Our school supports the arts to the best of their ability. The students are from a wide range of ability levels, from just beginning on an instrument to nationally recognized soloists. We try to provide them with every opportunity possible to grow as a musician and a person.

My Project

My students need an alto saxophone to use in concert band, jazz band, pep band and marching band. My goal is to set up the current and future students with enough high quality equipment that they won't have to deal with traditional fund raising to maintain their equipment. School instruments must be in good condition, if a student is using a school horn, they should not have to fight with it to get a good sound. I try to take care of repairs and maintenance out of our budget, but it is never enough and the cost is often passed on to the student. Our inventory of alto saxophones is not acceptable. While there are five on the shelf, only one of them is playable at the moment. I am attempting to remedy this over time, but the funds for instrument repair never seem to materialize. Owning a new instrument will greatly help in our current and future ensembles.

One instrument for one student may not seem like much of an investment in our program, but think of it like this: One student with a good quality horn, per year.

Add another one next year, and the next, and the next. Over time, we will have less repair bills to deal with and can spend our meager budget on more important things such as literature and technology to make music more accessible for students. One instrument that works properly can make a world of difference for the student using it.
