This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every child is born special in their own way, but some children never feel the reality of that statement. Many of our students fall into that category. Whether due to lack of resources, or simply challenging circumstances, our student body is made up of children from very difficult backgrounds. Some of the challenges our students face are due to English proficiency and others to financial limitations. However, our mission is to teach them how special they truly are.
Our school motto is, "You Matter," and every morning it is shouted out as an affirmation to start the day.
We believe those words and try hard daily to prove it to our students with our actions. As many young people around the world, our students deal with the challenges of acceptance, self-esteem, and their ever-changing emotions, (especially our preteens and teens). They are faced with the challenge of defying the odds and in some cases even making history in their families. Since we are a public charter school, purposely placed in an impoverished, prominently Hispanic side of town, some of our students will be the first to complete middle/high school, play an organized sport, and eventually graduate college!
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from the soccer balls and training equipment. These tools with catapult their learning and dramatically improve their skill level. Multiple soccer balls will allow various students or groups to participate simultaneously. The different training equipment will help each student fine-tune their hand-eye coordination and overall muscle memory. As each student makes the transition to student-athlete, they will be supported with a well-rounded learning experience. Each item is a small tool that contributes to their overall training. Each player's ability to move with the ball, pass, receive and finish at the goal will be enhanced by each session with these new materials. Ultimately, the goal is to maximize repetitions and provide all players the chance to better themselves each time they practice. These items will allow them to do just that.
The joy of working with underprivileged students is teaching them their true value and making them feel like millionaires.
I am certain that these student-athletes will forget, (even if it is only for a moment), about their financial limitations and simply train. Having the quality and quantity of equipment that is needed on the field will free their minds of unnecessary distractions.
