My Students
My students are seen as "the bad kids" or at risk kids. I believe they just need a little push in the right direction.
I teach the Alternative Learning Classroom in a high poverty, small town in Arkansas.
The students I get are placed with me for numerous reasons including at risk for dropping out, trying to recover credits in order to graduate, discipline problems and getting kicked out of regular class. I believe with the right mixture of motivation, learning and pushing every child can succeed in the classroom and society. These students are a product of their environment and some do not have stable lives at home.
My Project
I requested six copies of the book "Small Steps" which I read two years ago. It's about a young black male (which a majority of my students are) that has been in trouble in the past and is trying to change his future despite people stereotyping him based on his past. I also requested a few books to help with lessons on character education and traits so that I can try to incorporate these things into other classes.
My students need to learn and be convinced that no matter what your past has been like you can always change your future by making better choices in your life.
I don't want them to end up where the statistics show them going...jail.
