This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Giggling, singing, and learning are non-stop in my special education, self-contained, kindergarten/first grade classroom in East Harlem.
My class is filled with the 12 best kindergarten and first grade special-needs students around!
Every day, they are faced with the challenges of socializing, fine and gross motor skills, communicating/understanding language and dealing with emotional needs. Even with each of their individual needs and challenges, they love coming to school and learning. Whether progress is made in baby steps or large gains, we are always celebrating the learning and social achievements of the students in class.
Last year was the first year our school opened up a self-contained special education classroom. We are located in a high-poverty neighborhood and did not have enough funding to purchase necessary teaching tools and educational resources. Our classroom was full of unconditional love and an enthusiasm for education but lacked learning essentials.
We had a great year last year and did our best but now we need your help!
My Project
I am requesting social studies and science themed boxes and library sets. By having these additional resources, my students will have the opportunity to improve their understanding of social studies and science vocabulary and concepts. Each of these boxes help children to explore through literacy, mathematics, art, music, dramatic play and movement. The visuals that are provided in each of the books and boxes bring the concepts to life and help to make a more engaging curriculum.
My students are kindergarten and first grade students but function below grade level.
By adding social studies and science books and manipulatives, you are giving them additional resources that match their learning styles to help them master important skills and learning concepts.
