it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is true, that you don't know what you're missing if you've never experienced or been exposed to something. Many of my students have not been exposed to reading books on their own. I would like to inspire their curiosity by introducing them to various texts in order to expand their worldly access.
I am blessed with three classes of 6th graders.
Each class ranges from 28-33 students of varied reading levels. Many scholars are hungry for new reading materials, as they do not have access to any at home. Others, simply have not had much exposure to books or being read to, so they do not know what they like or what they don't like about reading.
My school has a superstar team of educators that are all on board with increasing the literacy of our students. Reading is required in our homerooms, and all subjects encourage reading as an important skill. We also realize that literacy equals knowledge, and knowledge gives opportunity to access. Without which, the vast majority of our students will end up without the chance to become positive contributors to our community and to society.
My Project
I've requested two different styles of reading materials for my classroom. Individual reading is still a difficult skill for most of my students. With a class set of texts that are of high-interest, I look forward to encouraging participation in classroom reading, both aloud, and silently. With everyone reading the same stories, we can have partner, small group, and class discussions about different elements of the texts in order to dig deeper into the stories.
The weekly news magazine will be a fantastic element to add to my students' reading routine. With current and topical news articles written on my students' reading level, our discussions about nonfiction texts won't have to be boring! I will set aside time each day to read a different article and select different elements to focus on aligned with our weekly lesson targets (vocabulary, textual organization patterns, etc.).
These simple materials in my classroom will bring together at least 90 students' reading activities.
By presenting these young readers with interesting text, they will learn that they can find enjoyment, pleasure, escape, information, and knowledge through reading.
The more they read, the better our scholars become at doing it. And the better they become at reading, the better they become at all subjects.
Literacy is a vital concern for this inner-city school. Help our young people thrive.
