These amazing 4th graders are learning both English and Spanish every day as they are part of the dual language immersion program. Their desire to learn is exciting to see in their eyes but it is hard to capture at times as they have struggled through this pandemic. They love being in the classroom with their classmates that they have bonded with as they have been together since 1st grade.
They have been able to learn how to work collaboratively in small groups and to build each other up as they do this.
They love discussing their knowledge of a newfound fact or discovery. They want to share what book they have finished recently. Each student wants to share how they solved a math problem when at the beginning of the year some didn't even want to do the math! The love of learning has taken over the classroom.
My Project
Each of these books will be covered in simple brown paper. Then on the cover will be a paragraph from each book. Students will have the opportunity to read each paragraph and select a book (by not judging it by the cover). We can relate this to character education and not judging others by their appearance.
Students will be able to read their book and collaborate with their peers on the same book!
They will be able to have access to books as COVID has limited many of them from getting to the library or being able to purchase them due to the lower-income area in which they live.
They will be able to convince their peers/friends why they should read the book that they read. They will have the opportunity to pick a different book and do a different activity with the new book. Having several of the same book and a variety allows for this to happen.
