Don't Fund This Project! (Art Doesn't Matter.)

My students need 16 books that visually show them that the world is bigger than their neighborhood.

My Students

My students are 17-19 years old. However, their reading level is on average between a 1st to 8th grade level. Because of this they have not been given materials which enable them to learn the advanced concepts essential to their developments as future citizens.

My students are Special Education English Students in an inner-city high school.

They are very bright, but have not been given much of a chance by their community, peers, or previous teachers. Because of their low reading level, many people assume that it matches their intelligence. This is not the case...they love to a variety of books and topics in ways that continue to amaze me as an educator.

My Project

Who needs art? It's been cut out of most inner-city school's budgets. It isn't required for students to take a class in art in order to graduate from high-school. It isn't related to any "real" subject. Furthermore, why would an English teacher want art books in his library? Please let me explain the importance of this supposedly superfluous course of study. I can't count how many times I have been in the middle of a lesson and students start to doze out of consciousness, when I stop and say, "let me show you what I'm talking about." Students go from doziness to consciousness with the mere flipping of a page when it comes to a visual representation of the topic at hand. Furthermore, many of my students seem to believe that their city is the entire world. With these 16 Art books that I am requesting, I hope to show them that the world is a big place, with many ideas and opportunities. Through these art resource books I hope to encourage them to reach out to the larger culture and contribute, rather than settle for the immediate.

Without art students are limited to words and lectures about the world around them.

Art is a way to annex the thoughts and worlds previously foreign to my students. Please consider providing my students with a means of broadening their horizon.
