My Project

Our students are English learners who are struggling to read at grade level. Our small groups meet daily, and this is especially vital practice for our older students who are struggling to see how letters and sounds work together. We are seeking your help in providing our students with letter trays that will help them practice phonics and reading skills. These trays will be used daily in our small groups.

English is a language full of variations with many ways to spell the same sound and many exceptions to every rule.

These boards with letter tiles will help students overcome that challenge. For example, the words "read" and "reed" are spelled differently but pronounced the same way. Just try and read the next sentence and notice all the different sounds "ough" make. "It's tough I had not thought that through, though!" English likes to keep us on our toes is what I tell them! This project will help our students see how different letters and groups of letters can work together to make the same sound. They will learn by doing, by examining words and the pieces that make up those words, and then figuring out how they are spelled.

We are using UFLI which is an approved curriculum that is aligned to the science of reading. Magnetic activity trays, durable magnetic tiles, and engaging activity mats provide the tools advancing young learners need for hands-on literacy skills practice. It will be such a wonderful reinforcement of those developing phonics skills when they use the letter tiles to build, blend, and segment words.
