My Students
Do you remember your high school art class? Hopefully it was an exciting class where you grew both academically and personally. As a graphic design and AP 2D design teacher, I am always looking for opportunities where my students can use art to creatively articulate themselves through writing and drawing.
Not only do I want my students to be prepared for higher level art courses I want them to learn how to communicate both abstractly and authentically.
My students attend an urban high school. Even though they have a lot on their plates, and they come from neighborhoods that are far from affluent, they are committed to doing their best to be prepared for college. This year they are facing the added challenge of starting the year in a virtual classroom. While our students stepped up to the challenge of finishing their school year online, they told us they really missed their school community. This September I want to make sure that my art students feel connected to our virtual classroom community and excited about their new learning opportunities by having sketchbooks/journals and sketching supplies for the homes.
My Project
To prepare high school students to be critical thinkers through art making is the most important objective of a high school art class, especially during these historic times. I want to teach my students to communicate, interact, and work collaboratively and to be critical examiners of contemporary media. I want my students to be able to keep a personal sketchbook and create a drawing a day and a journal entry every day as a personal record of their thoughts and questions. Keeping a sketchbook is a great way of keeping track of creative ideas and getting in the habit of regular drawing.
There's a certain magic that happens while sketching and journaling.
In the most literal sense, sketching is problem-solving. We need sketchbooks, drawing pencils and watercolor colored pencils to start their new school year online so they will be able to keep a personal drawing journal of their experiences, thoughts, ideas and feelings.
