Documenting the Immigrant Experience Through the Eyes of a Student
My students need a MacBook to create documentaries about their lives as immigrants in America for their history class.

My Students
My students are a great group of students who are filled with a lot of energy. My students are a mixture of Brooklyn natives and recent immigrants to the country. We have a rather large population of recent Yemeni immigrants. They come to school excited to learn each day. Their excitement pushes me to do my best in creating lessons that will feed into their excitement.
My immigrant students often have the responsibility to contribute to their families by working long hours after school and even before school in small stores in the five boroughs.
Even with long hours outside the classroom my students are dedicated to their school work and coming to school daily. They know education is the pathway to a better future.
My Project
Many of my students live a life that dances between two worlds. They work hard to maintain their culture of the Middle East, South East Asia, and North Africa while balancing the demands of being an American teenager.
The majority of my immigrant students grow up in the war-torn county of Yemen and would like to document their immigrant experience through film.
They would like to document the immigrant experience of being an immigrant teenager in NYC while making connections to our Global Studies curriculum.
Allowing my students to share their experience through film will allow them to build literacy and written communication skills along with creating a cultural bridge between their life back home and life here in America.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
