My students need a document camera so that they are able to see the books I read and the worksheets I model for them to complete.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine trying to keep 29 4 and 5 year-old children, whose first language is not English, engaged in a storybook, of which half the class cannot clearly see the pictures to, from where they are sitting. This is the daily challenge I face as a kindergarten teacher of a large, active, ELL class.
Our school serves homeless and at-risk children and their families.
All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of our students' families regularly go without life’s basic necessities, such as housing, food, clothing, water, medical care, and hygiene. We are very lucky to receive donations and assistance from the community in order to provide our students with food, clothing, and sometimes even medical care. Furthermore, for many of the students, their first language is not English. They manage to learn a second language as well as the grade level curriculum in a school year. Despite the many difficulties our student have to overcome, they try hard to ensure they are in school and on time every day, and they put forth their best effort in their studies.
My Project
I am hoping to use technology to build my students’ background knowledge. We have been fortunate to have funds donated to our school in order to purchase Promethean Boards in a few classrooms. I moved into a room with a Promethean board last year. I have been able to effectively use it to further my students’ understanding of the curriculum and the English language. Unfortunately, we do not have a scanner or document camera in our school, so I am not able to put up any of the worksheets we do, or books we read on the Promethean board to help my students see them better. I would love to be able to use a document camera in addition to the Promethean Board in order to build my students’ background knowledge. I feel that this will assist my students in constructing their own knowledge of educational concepts and the English Language.
This project is very important to me.
I try to provide my students with the best education and educational opportunities possible. I believe that technology, when used effectively can be a powerful tool in student learning. It will help to keep more of my students actively engaged with the material being presented. This will then lead to a greater, more meaningful learning experience for my students every day.
