This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 4th year teacher in one of the largest and most challenging school districts in the country. My students come from a high need and high poverty area where just getting to high school is an achievement. However, I am pushing them for more. I am working with a fantastic group of Latino and African American American students who inspire me everyday with their perseverance and resiliency.
Many of my students will be the first in their families to attend college. I am helping them with this journey. However, many of them are still developing the skills to be successful. They need help visualizing difficult subject matter like chemistry, practice with hard math problems, and skills for studying. Even though our school is relatively new, they somehow forgot to include technology in the plan for student resources and classroom supplies. Consequently, we have little technology to help students in their learning. The single piece of equipment that could solve this problem and aid my students in their learning is an ELMO. This combined LCD projector and document reader would give me incredible support in helping my students' learning in my chemistry classroom.
This resource would also allow me to utilize all my skills as a classroom teacher to bring my subject matter to life for my students. In the unit where I teach chemical reactions and balancing equations to my students, I would show them chemical reactions in 3-D on the computer. In the gas laws and molarity units I would use online tutorials to show my students how to complete difficult problems step by step. When explaining many of my assignments, I would display that assignment in a large format on screen so my students could visualize what I was talking about. This would help my English Language learners who struggle with the English language. When preforming demonstrations about catalysts (Elephant toothpaste!), I would show it on a projection screen for maximum effect. This resource would be used EVERYDAY in my classroom and would help every unit that I teach in my class. My students would be ecstatic to begin to use the ELMO as soon as next semester when studying the periodic table.
Donors Choose is a wonderful program that has helped so many classrooms obtain materials that truly make a difference in the daily lives of students. Whether you are considering a first time donation or you've been here before, you really make a difference and have a major impact on teachers, students and learning. I thank you so much for considering my proposal and know that the materials with be loved and appreciated by many students for years to come.
