This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is an exciting innovation school as part of the portfolio of our school district. As the district’s first dual language high school, our school offers the city's bilingual and English language learners a holistic education modeled on the successes of the district's only bilingual elementary-middle school and other high performing district, pilot, and charter schools.
What makes my students special is their enduring tenacity for learning and intellectual curiosity even in the face of enormous obstacles like COVID-19, a year of interrupted schooling and factors beyond their control like demographics and generational poverty.
My school's minority student enrollment is 98%. Forty-eight percent of our students are classified as English language learners and 14% are students with disabilities. More than 47% of our students are classified as economically disadvantaged. Yet they do not define themselves by these statistics. They are quite simply hopeful, young people who still believe in the American dream are willing to put forth effective effort to achieve their goals.
My Project
My 12th grades students are reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. We are analyzing the book through a humanities lens and reading in Spanish. Afterwards students will write a literary analysis of the novel
We need a document camera to analyze expert models of writing and to show off exemplary student work in real-time.
This project will help students to learn to set a goal for writing, to use exemplary writing to note expert writing moves and to try these move out in the own writing. More than 60 Students will benefit from this project.
