My Students
Help my students be the best writers they can be. Writing is a difficult thing for children. Teaching them how to write is an individual process. Getting to all my students at once is almost impossible.
The students in my class are eager to learn.
They want to please me and do their best work. In my class we are exploring new topics and ideas all the time. Each student is so excited about the things they learn, they want to talk and tell me about it all the time. Writing allows children the opportunity to have a voice, to express themselves. It is hard to write when talking is so easy. Children do not want to take the time to sit down to write. When we do it as a class, they are more excited because they see we are all doing it together.
My Project
Teaching children to write is an individual thing. I need them to explore topics in their heads and then transfer ideas onto paper. In the lower grades, children can speak so rapidly and writing is so hard. Spelling words and getting thoughts down on paper can be extremely difficult for them which often stops or hinders their writing ability.
I want to write together as a class so my students can see what I want them to do and write. I want them to be able to see the words on the smart board in big letters so it is easy for them to follow along.
A document camera is a magical device. It is a camera that is on a base that has a long neck, which is movable, that extends from the base in a vertical direction. At the top of this arm, is a camera that hooks into my smart board. When turned on, it is a live stream of what I am doing projected onto the smart board, 5 feet square in diameter, for everyone to see at the same time.
Writing as a class takes on a whole new perspective when children can see what I am doing and writing.
Students can easily understand and follow along when they are able to see. It is amazing the ability it creates to engage students in the learning process and I can look up at any time from what I am doing to help and encourage students in their own work. Seeing is believing. Help me help my students to see!
