Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"This is fun!" These were the words a student said after presenting her method for solving an introduction activity to balancing equations. Witnessing the excitement that can come from really understanding math and the way it can be applied to life is what makes teaching great.
Our school serves students in grades 9-14 who come from all over New York City's five boroughs.
They start talking college classes at a Community College when they are in 10th grade and have the opportunity to complete their associates degree while being supported by the school community. As a result, we are working to prepare them for the very immediate reality of taking college classes.
My Project
This year I am focusing on student discussion and increasing student voice in the classroom. With the shift to Common Core mathematics, students are given larger, real world problems that require deeper thinking and can be approached in multiple ways. These types of problems lend themselves to discussion.
Students learn best when they have the opportunity to interact with each other and engage in productive struggle.
A document camera will allow us to showcase student thinking and different ways of approaching these problems during small group and full class discussions. My students enjoy interacting in this way and looking at each other's work. A document camera will let all of my students see the example we are talking about quickly and easily. It will also increase my students' pride in their work.
