I teach a third grade class of English language learners at a low performing, inner city public school in Los Angeles.
At many schools in Los Angeles County, students are taught literacy from the reading Program Open Court. This reading program while very structured and good at teaching younger students to read, lacks rich text for older students in third through fifth grades. The literature is composed of short stories and excerpts. Students do not get the opportunity to read and complete whole texts which can foster a love of reading due to character development and plot development.
In my classroom, I attempt to find corresponding chapter books from the Open Court anthologies for students to read. I form literature circles with these students. However, copies of these books are in short supply. Having class sets (35 copies) of texts such as "Charlotte's Web", would help to make more enriching reading experiences for my ESL students. They deserve to have opportunities to get excited about a text and to have discussions about the literary elements that good books share.
Our school also lacks the funding for technology. It is almost impossible to model how to use classroom manipulatives in an effective way without the aid of technology like a document camera.
The document camera would give my students exposure to images and text not easily viewed at a distance.
English language learners require images and examples, along with good books, to assist them with language acquisition. The document camera will give them access to see these things with ease from their seats.
