My students need 4 Bullfrog Dissection BioKits to dissect frogs in order to understand the anatomy of amphibians and how pollution in the water affects each organ.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the moment you walked into a science class where you discovered you would be dissect something? Were you excited? Were you grossed out? Either way, were you engaged and ready to learn about the animal? I think yes!
I teach 11th grade environmental science to an underprivileged city school in New York.
My students have never dissected anything in high school. I want them to be able to experience and learn about animals in a hands-on way. Not only will these skills prepare them for college, where they will be preparing and writing up lab reports, but they may also be inspired to become doctors or scientists in the future.
My Project
My students will learn the structure of the frog. This dissection will be after my students discussed the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and food webs. They will begin to understand how wildlife is effected by pollution and then be able to see how the various organs in the frogs compare to humans and other animals.
I believe this project is important because it keeps the students engaged while they learn a lot about anatomy and science in general.
They will learn what it's like to be a scientist and how every species has a place in the food web of life.
