Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very bright and creative. Many of them are considering the field of medicine and they get so excited when they get to wear the white lab coats. Science instantly becomes more fun and memorable. Fun and memorable, I want that for my students.

My students represent every ethnicity, come from various language abilities, and socioeconomic status.

About a third of my students come from immigrant families and they expect to be the first in their family to go to college. I teach equal numbers of gifted students and students with special needs. I've got the American melting pot right in my classroom and wonderfully supportive parents. Since I teach at a magnet school, my students ride the school bus for over an hour each way just to come to school. I respect their decision to not accept their neighborhood school and choose to come to my school so I work very hard at making sure their decision is worthwhile by providing a wide variety of experiences and provide opportunities for support and advancement.

My Project

Through my students' prompting, I created a medically related project for our unit on cells, bacteria, viruses and the immune system. My students participated in lab activities, like testing blood pressure, testing lung capacity, observing dialysis treatments and many projects that include videos, epidemiology simulations, and genetic engineering simulations. The white lab coats would add that extra incentive to look forward to my class and succeed for the opportunity to "wear the lab coat." The lab coats will be most useful in creating a layer of protection while conducting lab experiments. We work with mandy dyes like iodine, methylene blue, sudan IV, Janus green, and plenty of food coloring and my students, like all young adults, have a tendency to get these stains on their clothes. Right now, I don't have enough lab aprons for the entire class. These lab coats are very important for our class activities but our limited school budget does not allow us to purchase them.

Wearing a lab coat, to you and I, is not that impressive.

However, if you consider the fact that many of my students don't even have a regular doctor, that they would be the first in their family to go to college, and that many are considering the field of medicine, lab coats become an awesome incentive to come to science class. These coats would be useful and a motivator to succeed. I expect my students to do well so they can afford to dream. Thank you for considering my project.
