My Students

My students and I are using distance learning to continue their art instruction. They complete their assignments using Google Classroom. For many, this has been a bit of a struggle for several reasons. For one, my school is located in Elmhurst, Queens, which has been identified as the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the students and their families have been impacted by illness, loss of a loved one, financial hardships, and a language barrier. Nearly all students come from a low-income household. For a significant number of my students, English is a second language and they have a hard time communicating and understanding the curriculum. This has been especially difficult with online learning, students get confused about how to do the work. They are also limited with resources to do the assignments. However, Art gives them an outlet to express themselves and break through some of the language barriers that interfere with their learning.

It would be ideal for them to see live art demonstrations and videos of me teaching them while they are safe at home.

Although its been extremely sad not seeing students physically, I am determined to make their Distance Learning engaging, interactive, and purposeful.

My Project

For these English language learners, school is the primary, and sometimes the only source for them to listen to and practice the language. They rely on authentic and meaningful experiences in school, and now we have to figure out how to give them those experiences remotely. This year, I am teaching art to Kindergarten and Third grade students, so this donation will be reaching close to 400 curious, creative, kind and passionate children. The document camera will be an effective tool to actively engage the students through live art demonstrations, where students can see me model art techniques and instructions. The recording feature on this device will allow me to record art demonstrations for students to access when necessary. The portable hard drive will provide storage for all of the images and videos of their artwork. With your help, I can connect with my truly remarkable students that have so much talent waiting to be nurtured.
