"Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather."-John Ruskin
Imagine never seeing or feeling snow...many of my students have never seen or felt snow.
My day is filled with bright and energetic 6th graders who desire to have more hands-on science activities.
My school is a Title I school with over 90% of my students qualifying for free or reduced lunch due to low economic status. They are very motivated and eager to learn, but often do not have the resources or experiences that help them achieve better in science. Hands-on activities can help teach a concept better than a textbook.
My Project
My students will use the materials to learn about and gain a better understanding of the different types of weather. Snow is an abstract idea to most of my students, as they have never seen a snowfall. The Insta-Snow has the feeling of fresh fallen snow and the growing crystals will aid in the understanding of how snowflakes are formed.
The weather related lab activities will give my students multiple opportunities to explore meteorology.
Students learn and retain information best when they are able to see and feel examples of what they are reading about. Although my students will not be able to see real snow or build a snowman, they will be able to get a better idea about what snow crystals look and feel like.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
