This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hairy legs and fuzzy antennae; spores on fern and pollen grains! These are the things my students will see with new microscopes.
Our school is a Title I campus in an inner city neighborhood.
Ninety-eight percent of the children are on free/reduced lunch and most of my students are English language learners with few opportunities for science experiences outside the classroom. They are eager to learn the science concepts, and as second language learners, need as many concrete examples as possible to make connections to the words they see on the state mandated science exam. They love coming to science every day and exploring new concepts and ideas.
My Project
Students love to look at specimens under the microscope, and learning to discern details helps them with the critical thinking they need to master science. Currently, we have only one student microscope per table of four children. As you can imagine, it is difficult for all four students to have enough time for equal exploration. Six additional microscopes will allow us to work in groups of two instead of four, and allow each child more access and practice time.
In the past, my students have been overwhelmed that "strangers" would care enough about them and their education to donate materials for our lab.
I have seen the impact it makes when they realize that donors value their learning, and the care they take of those materials. Thank you for considering our class project.
