My Project

Nationwide there is a literacy crisis. According to 2019 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) scores, only about a third of 4th graders can read and comprehend at a Basic level. When we take a look at the literacy achievement of our most vulnerable demographic groups, the numbers are even more disappointing.

This project features teaching tub materials and games that will help me provide explicit and systematic instruction to my students to help them learn how to read, targeting: speaking and listening skills (Audio Enhancement Tools & CD Player for Listening to Audio Books), decoding and encoding skills (Word Ladders).

Working at a school where about 70% of the students identify as Black and/or African American, but, only about 20-30% can read and meet grade-level expectations, literacy becomes a lens of equity and racial justice.

Students need to learn to read, not primarily for enjoyment, and not necessarily to pass standardized reading assessments, but to be able to participate fully as literate and productive citizens within our country’s democracy.
