My Students

In my classroom, we are reading fools! Nothing brings my students more joy than reading a book, understanding the content, and being able to discuss it with their peers. But, have you ever been in a situation where you could not communicate with your peers because you couldn't understand the content?

I teach fifth grade in North Alabama.

My students' reading levels range from 2.7 (second grade, seventh month) to 9.3 (ninth grade, third month) according to the STAR Reading Assessment. The group of children I currently have loves to read. At this point in the year, 15 out of 18 of my students have reached their specific reading goal! Those who have not made it, are being constantly encouraged by their classmates to read during any spare time they have. For some of my students, reading is a struggle. Not because they do not have the desire, but because they lack the skills to read fluently enough for the story to make sense. They often have classmates read with or to them to get passed their decoding difficulties.

My Project

A cassette player would allow my struggling decoders the opportunity to engage with the text in a way that allows them to understand what is going on in the story. By spending less time decoding, students spend more time getting to know the characters and plot of the story. Listening to stories on a cassette player also allows students to hear many different voices reading fluently, reading with expression, stopping at periods and pausing at commas. All things good readers do.

These items will make such a difference in the reading habits of my students.

There is nothing more special than seeing those strugglers engage in a conversation about a story with their peers who may read at a higher level!
