This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine creating a multimedia project without being able to listen to audio and video files? That's the problem faced by students in my high school library. I have been a librarian at this school for only three years, and I can honestly say that I have finally found my dream job.
Students at this large public school are a unique and diverse bunch who consistently surprise me with their sassy, sophisticated, mature, clownish, intelligent, compassionate, indifferent, enthusiastic, lackadaisical personalities.
And there are more than 3200 of them! We have students who are into everything from Nietzsche to Naruta, who come from all over the globe and speak over fifty languages. We are a motley crew. We have an unbelievable Performing Arts program that includes full-scale student and faculty theatre productions, orchestra, band, jazz band, chorus, and dance. We have a variety of boys and girls sports(even cricket!),clubs (including a Gay-Straight Alliance club), school publications, peer-mediation, community service organizations and more. We also have a significant number of ESL and At-Risk students who benefit greatly from multimedia teaching and learning. Our staff is dedicated, talented, and caring. Many work extra hours to tutor students in need of help.
My Project
Several teachers bring their classes to our library to use our laptop cart and Smart Board. Many of their projects involve listening to audio-visual content on the Internet. For example, three Social Studies teachers won a grant last year that included teaching students how to create podcasts. Unfortunately, it was very difficult without headphones for students to hear their own recordings. Other teachers bring students to the library to prepare them for standardized tests. Headphones would help these students work independently and at their own pace using online resources. As school librarians, my colleague and I teach students how to integrate audio-visual content into their multimedia projects. We are also planning to teach students how to create online booktalks and reviews using sites like One True Media as well as have them listen to real authors speak on sites such as teachingbooks.net. A class set of headphones would come in handy for these types of projects.
This is a multimedia world, and traditional methods of teaching no longer work for all of today's students.
In order to reach a variety of learners, school libraries need to be equipped with a variety of technology and equipment. A simple accessory like headphones could be the difference between the success and failure of some of our students. I would appreciate any help offered to my school's library program by the benefactors of Donors Choose. Thank you for considering us.
