Located in Honolulu, we are filled with rich Hawaiian history. Our school serves students grades 6-8. There are many luxury apartments surrounding our school, however, the majority of our students currently reside in government and affordable housing complexes or transitional and homeless shelters, while others live with relatives or in multi-generational homes. My students come from diverse backgrounds with multi-languages spoken at home.
Our students arrive to school late and often times haven't eaten since they left school the previous day.
We understand that childhood hunger is prevalent in our school and we want to meet their nutritional needs so they can meet their educational needs.
My Project
The items we selected such as oatmeal, cereal, breakfast bars, protein bars, and crackers are all healthy items that will be provided to students when they arrive late to school. Many of our students do not eat breakfast at home. When they arrive late, they miss the school breakfast that is being offered to them. Upon checking in with the office before entering the classroom, students who miss breakfast will be allowed to select a breakfast option to eat it prior to entering the classroom or during class instruction. Once they are fed, they will be able to focus on the teachers' instruction. Often times, the students lack focus in the classroom because they are hungry.
Providing students with a healthy food option will allow them to focus on learning and increase their academic potential.
