This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Counting Mississippis' just does not work anymore! We need digital stop watches for our science program. I teach fifth grade in a high poverty neighborhood. I understand the need for solid science education, but a lack of supplies hinders my teaching. I teach every subject in class to 25 anxious, intelligent, beautiful children. Unfortunately, my science lessons are the most needing of supplies and money, neither of which my principal can supply!
Our Science explorations are most fun and educational when they are hands-on. My students have unending questions about life. How do boats float? How do grandfather clocks work? What causes erosion? We create experiments with sand and soil, string, and popsicle sticks and the students love it. They have created hypotheses and tested them. Unfortunately, we can only time our findings by counting Mississippi's. We do not have timing devices; in fact our classroom clock forever reads 4:10, which is no help to our budding scientists. My class of 25 fifth graders have been working so hard on their Science theories. I just wish I could support their research more with proper tools.
We need handheld stop watches. We can use the timers as we work in teams to record our findings and accurate report on our experiments. This week we used flat plates of sand and slowly dripples water over the "plateau". As the water flowed the students watched the land "erode". We created deltas and canyons, but we could not effectively determine how quickly the land changed because our only system of timing is counting Mississippi. Although the experiment was educational, the findings would have been more accurate and informative if the changes were clocked using a real timing tool. We need stop watches in our class.
You will make a difference in the lives of 25 children who sometimes forget there is a whole big world out there -- Remind me and my students that people care. Your help will make a difference in so many ways.
Thank you!
