I teach 21 3rd grade students in a low-income, rural setting. Almost one fourth of my class speaks Spanish at home. Most of my students live in poverty and receive free lunch. Most of my students have been in my class since first grade and will be moving up to 3rd grade with me for the 2008-2009 school year.
It has been several years since I last taught third grade. In recently reviewing my state standards, I realize that the resources that I have available to me for developing complex third grade concepts are quite limited. With most of my students living in poverty, they have little opportunity or resources for concept development and enrichment outside of school.
Students learn to tell time to the hour in first grade, to the 5 minutes in 2nd grade, and in third we put it all together. We have to know to the minute, various names for the same time, and elapsed time. These last two skills are quite tricky, especially if you have not quite mastered time to the minute. I have found some resources that I think will help us practice these skills. I would like for my class to have a few Problem Solving Clock Books. The ones that I want are work with 5-minute intervals and duration of time. I think if I have these books I can put my kids into small groups, have them work together to figure out the answer to the problem, then compare answers and celebrate.
Without these books, it will be much more difficult and much less fun for my students to truly master 3rd grade time concepts. Your help with this project will make it possible for my class and other 3rd grade classes in my school to build a firm understanding of time. We would really appreciate having these materials to work with while mastering telling time and determining elapsed time.
