This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year teacher. I teach in a high need District 75 school in the South Bronx. District 75 is made up of children who require more attention and help than regular special education. The students in this school suffer from severe cases of emotional disturbance and/or autism. I teach the most restrictive case of special education which is the 8:1:1 ED class which means that there are eight students with one teacher and one paraprofessional.
I have a class of all boys! It is very difficult to teach this population and what I find to be an added difficulty is that my third graders don't know how to read. Seven of the eight students don't recognize sight words. This created an added frustration for my students to deal with every single day.
I ask that some very generous donor please find it in their heart to donate eight hooked on phonics kits for my students. I strongly believe that this kit will enable my students to tackle their biggest battle: literacy. This kit will definitely put my students on track with other students and boost their self-esteem!
