Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach mathematics in a high needs high school - over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world.
As one of the last large schools (over 4000 students) in the Bronx, I've always had a lot of competition for any resources. But I've found that the struggle is worth the effort - I can see how quickly my students respond when I introduce technology-based teaching techniques, and I can see their test scores improve.
I've managed to purchase an inexpensive LCD projector to use with my classes. This technology allows me to prepare material in advance, and present it to my students using PowerPoint or Smart NoteBook.
However, this setup works best for pre-packaged presentations. I can only project things I've prepared in advance. I can't let students share solutions to problems. I can't take advantage of "teachable moments" that may arise from newspaper stories or items a student brings to class.
By coupling a document camera with my laptop/projector I'll enable students to visualize almost any small item, from a document or newspaper article, to a small model or educational manipulative. Document cameras are the modern successor to the overhead projector, without the blinding lights. They can display both 2D and 3D objects. All students can see at once, without having to pass things around. I'm also requesting related video and USB cables in this proposal.
