Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is nothing as fulfilling for me as a music teacher as looking at the faces of my chorus students while they sing happily onstage. Unfortunately, my teaching schedule restricts the amount of time I get to spend working with the chorus, and they need supplemental instruction.
My students are incredible, hardworking children who attend a Kindergarten through eighth grade public school in a high poverty community in New Jersey.
They love music and are always open to new experiences, despite the financial limitations our school faces in providing these.
My Project
My students need an innovative chorus workshop focusing on harmonization that will culminate in an exciting performance for the school and community. This workshop would allow a veteran songwriter and music educator to spend a week working with the chorus on harmonization exercises and skills. They would get in depth exposure to amazing repertoire and would flourish as musicians and singers.
Mr. Bermiss has given workshops to our students in the past, and he has always been a huge hit. His workshops conclude with fabulous presentations that the school and community always enjoy. These performances give participating students a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Donations will give my students something exciting to work toward: a performance that they can be proud of.
Not only will their skills as individual and choral singers improve, but they will get to show their friends and family what music means to them.

Akie Bermiss
(Akie Bermiss will teach my sixth grade chorus a series of harmony exercises and skills over the course of a week that will culminate in a school wide performance.)
