Do Re Mi, ABC, 123: Music Room Rug Project

My Students

A typical day in my classroom involves singing, rhythm exercises, music history, and analytical listening. I want my students to be as excited about reading music as they are about learning to read the English language.

As a music teacher, I teach all the children in the building from Kindergarten - 5th grade.

I have about 500 students total and they all have music once a week for 40 minutes. I also have two groups of chorus kids that meet after school twice a week. These kids are excited to learn, expanding their world beyond that of their comfort zone. They enjoy rap and hip hop as most young people do, but they are learning to enjoy and are intrigued by jazz, Broadway, and classical to name a few genres. They also know their favorite artists can read music so they are working to master this skill.

My Project

Music rugs are available in selected sizes and aid students in music theory practices. Rectangle rugs contain squares along the rug’s edge filled with bright and colorful musical symbols. These square also serve as seating spots during rug time and circle games. The middle of the rug contains a large staff with a treble clef. Depending on the size ordered, the staff is large enough to teach the staff in a hands-on way and for music theory games when doing centers. All the while the seam is protected from the traffic of elementary sneakers and is pleasing to the eyes upon entry into the classroom.

For the past three years, the music room has had brand new carpet installed every summer.

In each installation, the carpet’s seam was placed down the middle of the classroom in high traffic areas. Every year, the carpet develops a rip on the seam and the process of installing a new rug begins again. A music-themed teaching rug placed over the carpet's seam would serve as both a learning aid and a protective tool against unwanted tears from elementary sneakers.
