My Students

Do you remember a time you were not able to efficiently communicate your needs to other people whether you were learning a new language or just not able to get your message across? What if you had difficulty communicating your needs or wants all the time? How would you feel?

I work with students who have mild to high functioning autism, ranging from second through fifth grade.

In working with this population, every student with Autism is different; you have to find out their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. There needs to be consistency and structured activities that are predictable. Providing an environment that contains visual supports allows the students to be aware of the expectations and routines throughout the day. Students with autism also tend to have difficulty with social and communication development, which may cause inappropriate behaviors or interactions among their peers and environment. Not being able to effectively express their concerns or deal with unexpected changes results in rising anxiety causing those students to stop functioning. My students attend a Title 1 public school K-5 where the students are mainstreamed within the general education classes for certain subjects throughout the day.

My Project

Communication and social interactions are core deficits with students who have autism. Many of my students are not able to communicate their wants and dislikes. As their teacher, I have had to figure out these through observations and parent questionnaires. In not being aware of these and not being able to communicate these to me, many of my students have had meltdowns to express their needs. In addressing the behaviors that occur, I am asking for a portable DVD player where students will be able to view themselves demonstrating appropriate social situations that they have difficulty expressing or engaging in once they become anxious. Prior to the occurrence of behavior, I will record the students as they engage in the desired behavior. Once the undesired is displayed, the DVD player will be used to show them the appropriate way. This will allow them to see and model the desired behavior.

The use of a Portable DVD Player will allow my students to view and model appropriate social interactions.

Through observation, my students will be able to see that they have engaged in the desired behavior before and can do it Again.
