My students need craft materials such as glass tiles, mosaic squares, glitter, feathers, glue, and foam pieces in order to create art works throughout the year, especially for the holidays.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title 1 school which integrates students with developmental delays with their able bodied peers. About half of our 700+ population have special needs. Our 90%+ of our school population qualifies for free lunch. My students are in third,fourth and fifth grade and are diagnosed with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities. They learn in a self-contained class. They have difficulties with speech, self-help, and fine motor skills.

I feel I can unlock the potential in my students if I can present them with colorful high interest learning materials that they want to use.

My students, despite their developmental delays, love to build, glue, and create fantastic projects using their imaginations.

My students love cutting, painting, gluing, and drawing using art supplies while at school.

My Project

While I was traveling in Rome I saw beautiful mosaics in the floors and walls of ancient ruins. I wanted to recreate some of these with my students.

These art supplies will allow my students to imitate mosaic designs such as are seen in the ruins of Rome Italy.

They will be able to place tiles in hand made frames donated by a patron in order to form a beautiful design.

The students will use the tiles and tile glue to make designs on the frame. Later we will grout the creation in order to fix the tiles in place.

Similarly, we will use the cut paper squares to make similar designs on paper for lovely creations which can be easily hung up at home.

These supplies will allow two tracks of learning - following directions to copy a given pattern and second using their own imaginations to create something they find beautiful which they can gift to a loved one.
