Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Biology at a small public charter high school in Downtown Los Angeles which serves kids from East Los Angeles. We take the same economically disadvantaged kids that go to the local over-crowded public high schools and raise their chances for success by creating a smaller, more structured environment, having higher expectations, and focusing on academic achievement.
For the past two years I have taught genetics units without manipulatives because our current school budget is extremely tight and only allows for school-wide purchases. It is difficult for teenage minds to comprehend the abstract molecule that is DNA. Without a model to see, touch and move, DNA simply becomes a picture that can be quickly forgotten. DNA is the molecule of life! Kids should be able to remember why they are who they are, why they act the way they act, and why they should learn more about their family background.
A class set of DNA models will help me help my students better understand what DNA is all about and how it works. Thanks in advance for your consideration and generosity.
