If they can build it they will pay attention!
I teach Advanced Biology to high school sophomores at a Northern California school with limited resources. My classroom is crowded with 35+ students per period so teaching lab based science is always a challenge. I am trying to prepare these students for careers and college but, I need materials to help me bring this learning to life for them.
My budget is just enough to cover markers, basic chemicals, pH paper....all the stuff they use up for each lab. Many times I am forced to reduce lab activities to paper and pencil exercises because of the cost involved in purchasing materials for so many students. DNA can be a difficult topic to master without being able to manipulate a model of DNA, nucleotides and a strand of RNA.
My students will understand the subject better and retain more information if I can get these DNA model kits into their hands. When they actually construct a strand of DNA and are able to model replication they can really being to learn. These two sets of DNA model kits will be enough for every two students to share and use as a team. Also, they are reusable and will be used year after year in my classroom as well as other Biology classrooms at my school.
With your help I can make learning real for my students, many of whom do not have support or motivation from home. Any way I can spark their interest and grab their attention gives them a better shot at success in school and life. Who knows, I may have YOUR future doctor in my class! Thank you for any help you can give.
