This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is all about hands on and doing. I know students can memorize from a book but true understanding comes from applying what you have learned and analyzing. That is why I try to incorporate as many real world labs as possible into my curriculum. It truly engages the kids.
The demographics of my school show that there are a great deal of kids here that are socioeconomically disadvantaged with a very diverse background.
What I see are bright minds that walk into my classroom eager to make something out of themselves. They deserve the chance to learn with the same advantages of any other student in this country. This school is bustling with motivated teachers and students who are doing and will continue to do amazing things. From extracurricular, to athletics, to ROTC, to science, and the arts this school sending out kids who are going to change the world.
My Project
Students will be able to run protein samples through a gel electrophoresis chamber and analyze the genetic make-up of a family that carries the sickle-cell allele. The lab uses real proteins and students carry out the exact same protocol that would be used in a real lab setting. They act out the role of a genetic counselor, construct a pedigree, and explain the evolutionary significance of the sickle cell allele.
This project will get students engaged in Biology, healthcare science, and technology.
It will also provide them valuable lab skills that will help them to excel in their stem classes in college. Most importantly it will make a real world connections between classroom studies and life. I hope to make biotechnologists out of them all!
