My Students

I am serving two high-poverty schools this semester, and my students are faced with so many challenges both in and out of the classroom. For the first time in my teaching career, 100% of the students at both schools qualify for free lunches. As their K-5 music teacher, I am constantly looking for ways to provide my students with the creative and exciting learning experiences that they need in order to be successful.

Curious, energetic, and full of so much potential, these students are engaged and participating in the entire lesson.

Music is their time to sing, play, move, or create, and they value it. I find myself telling them that they are "awesome," "amazing," or "smarticle particles" quite often during class!

Music class allows my students to grow through various musical experiences, develop their own sense of creativity, and make connections between other academic fields as they strive towards academic excellence. Music truly makes our students smarter.

No matter what happens anywhere else, my classroom is a happy place, a safe place, and the smiles on my students' faces show that.

My Project

In a world where many students not only struggle with basic computational skills, but are also afraid of them, having a "hook" becomes necessary. Using world drums in the music room has been an engaging means of capturing the attention of my elementary students, then making the connection between the fun we are having playing and creating music to the mathematical skills they are learning in their regular education classes. Counting basic rhythms, then subdividing them into fractions, is done through pictures, echo songs, and syllables on the drums. These additional djembes will add to the few that we have, so that more of my students will have a real drum to play, and they will not have to wait as long for their turn to rotate around.

When we are playing percussion in class, whether it is practicing rhythms or adding an accompaniment to music we have already learned, my students are making connections to other academic subjects, to their peers, and to their emotions.

Thank you for your interest in my project.
