My Project
Recently, our 5th and 6th graders have delved into the world of Robotic Competitions and STEM projects. Our students design and create their own robots to compete in different competitions in our area. They design their robots to do certain tasks and use coding programs to control their robots during the process. We have found that in order to match the ideas of our students with the design for their robots, we need certain pieces to create and build their robots to perform certain tasks. Finding these parts can be difficult, and sometimes a let down that the piece they are looking for does not exist or is way outside of our price range.
We are a small school with K-6, totaling around 380 students.
Also, living in a high-poverty area, it is hard to find donations to meet our needs. This being a new program at school, we are behind in the "pecking order" in being funded. By adding a 3D printer, our students would be able to create their own unique pieces for their robots and design them the way they dream them. The select students we have added to our Robotic Team find this a special place just for them.
Other students are great in athletics, are inducted into Gifted Programs, or have outside-of-school hobbies that their guardians can bring them to. We sought out the students who did not necessarily meet these criteria. The students who have joined find this a unique place for them and have been thriving. This club gives our students something that makes them feel special and teaches them skills that will aid them in the future job market in technology.
