Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are who I strived to be when I was younger. They tell stories about their families and dance the latest dances with their friends after their classwork—to the point where they’ve become family. My students are very intelligent and very much hands-on learners. They thrive the most when they have a role in the explanation, such as providing a gesture, a dance or a song to remember a concept. My students are extraordinary.
My Project
Hardly any of my students have ever left the school neighborhood. They have everything they need here at home, except for one thing - a holistic, worldly education, especially in this time of tense division. Diverse reading materials such as "Schooled" and "The Great Wall of Lucy Wu" will open my students to a world beyond the nice lady watering her flowers in the front lawn, or the supermercado on the corner. In the beginning of my teaching career, I vowed to provide a cosmopolitan education. For our neighborhood, for our families, and for our future, I humbly ask for help with the materials to do so.
