My students need hands-on materials to help them visualize and better understand processes leading to genetic variation in living things.

My Students
Welcome to my classroom! I teach high school Biology at a diverse high school in Maryland. I try my best to present students with engaging lessons that broaden their scope of the living world around them.
I have the privilege of working with a diverse group of students every day.
I work with students in inclusion Biology classes up through students taking IB Biology. In both classes, I have the opportunity to work with enthusiastic learners for whom learning comes easily, those that have learning disabilities, and those who are working hard to improve their English skills. The enthusiasm of my students is what motivates me to work so hard to develop interesting lessons that are differentiated for their varying needs.
My Project
Did you know that an individual's genes are shuffled and randomly combined before they are used to form eggs and sperm? Most students do not. The idea of genes being "shuffled" can be hard to master, and both the sock chromosomes and pop beads will make learning about this process easier to visualize, and most importantly, more fun! I am requesting materials to help my students better understand specific processes that occur during cell division (mitosis and meiosis).
In all levels of Biology, students must learn how organisms reproduce and how specific processes lead to the great diversity that we see in living things.
They are usually interested in this because it is easy to see "genetics" in their everyday lives. However, when it comes to studying the intricate processes involved in creating sex cells, students often times become confused or adopt misconceptions.
The requested materials will help me to best explain the processes involved in mitosis and meiosis and to show how crossing over leads to genetic diversity.
