My Students

This year I have the privilege of teaching an amazing, resilient crew of 4th graders. Our school is located in Northeastern Los Angeles county, and my students come to me from a variety of backgrounds. Approximately 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We are a small school with a big heart.

My students love listening to and talking about books and reading.

We have not let distance learning hamper our ability to share good books and have rich, engaging conversations. This school year, our learners are working from home and they need books to support them in their learning.

My Project

This first part of this project reflects my desire to give my students more access to the Asian American experience through literature. I found that my current multicultural collection of classroom books, while diverse, was absent of books by and about Asian Americans. I intend to use the books throughout the year, not just during any particular month, to have conversations about the value of cultural diversity. We will use these books as a kickoff to our Asian American biography research projects. The goal of this is to increase my students access to Asian and Asian American heroes they might not have heard of.

The second part of the project reflects my desire to support my students by having resources to prepare me to have challenging conversations around diversity and race.

As a teacher of color to children who do not look like me, I know the importance of having these difficult conversations. I feel that this work will encourage students to be are empowered to have their own uncomfortable conversations as well as create students as allies to students who do not look like them.
