Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Diverse is a word I would use to describe the CPS neighborhood school that I am so lucky to teach at. Among the approximately 1,000 students, we have at least twenty-five different cultures and/or languages represented. In addition to this, despite its size and perhaps because of its great diversity, our school has a strong sense of community. We are a family and proud of it.

The majority of our students come from low-income households and have a keen interest in learning.

This is where you can help out!

My Project

The books included in this particular project promote differences in us all, and they are meant to encourage reading as they reflect the diverse nature of our school's population - both culturally and linguistically. Not only will students - at any grade level - have the opportunity to check out these books from the school library, they will also be able to listen to them read aloud by me or their classroom teacher and engage in some meaningful discussions.

It is part of our school's mission to be "inclusive of all children by celebrating one another’s diversity of culture, language, and learning needs," and one way to foster this is to make sure students have quality books to read in which they can see themselves and their classmates.

In addition, having such diverse titles to choose from will also help students to broaden their worldview, and naturally, these books will help students to become better readers overall because these are books that they, themselves, are able to handpick to read.
