Diversity Matters (Diverse Reads)

My students need more diverse books such as "Dumpling Dreams" and "The Youngest Marcher" in their classroom. Diversity matters and my scholars need to see more characters in books that look like them. They also need books that teach them about other cultures.

My Students

Every day I greet students with a hug and a smile at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect of their lives. We engage in rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.

They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.

They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students" it is always "our students."

My Project

Diversity in schools is important and as a teacher I don't see it enough in my school. I want my children to see more characters in books that look more like them and to read books that represent other cultures.

I think it is important that all cultures are represented in schools because our world represents all cultures.

My students have asked on numerous occasions why they don't see brown boys and girls in their textbooks. This saddens and puzzles me because in 2017 we have so many biracial children. So many heroic individuals have fought for equality and this should not be a question a third grade student is asking.

This project includes numerous genres of text that include different races, religions, and the makeup of families. I know my children would benefit from reading about the differences of people that make up our world. My scholars have truly grown a love for reading this year and I know would love reading even more if they could read books with characters that represent all cultures. Instilling the acceptance of differences in my students has not been an easy task, but they have come so far. I can't wait to see where the adventures of so many diverse books will take them.
