My Students
Many of my students are at-risk students that do not have basic necessities and opportunities that students receive in other school settings. They have innovative ideas and are very creative, but many of them lack parental support and support of family members. They struggle to maintain positive interactions with their peers and many have anger issues.
They are naturally artistic, innovative thinkers that need socialization skills and opportunities to experience positive team building exercises that will allow them to experience positive social interaction with others.
My Project
My students need access to books that represent the diverse world that we live in. During storytime in our library, many of the books we have do not represent characters my students can relate to. There is more to life than fairy tales and happy endings, and students need to read about characters that represent diversity and cultures that are different from their own.
These books will allow students to find commonalities with the characters they read about and foster an appreciation of other cultures.
These books will also develop our library collection and provide opportunities for thought-provoking discussions that relate to current events and trends.
By reading diverse literature, students can gain insight into cultural differences and the importance of daily customs and rituals. The books will arouse their curiosity, allow them to see different characters and lifestyles, and understand that we are all unique!
