Diversity in the French-Speaking World

Help me give my students the gift of the French-speaking world by supplying a book cart, bulletin board, books, and other resources to display and learn from the people and voices of the French-speaking world.

My Project

Most students who take French do not know about the wide diversity of peoples, cultures, voices, and languages spoken as part of the greater French-speaking world. It is my hope that in my classroom students will learn to appreciate, investigate, discover and learn from them. My students are curious and have a natural desire to make connections and comparisons with French culture, but that is not where it ends. I have come to learn that some of my students have Afro-Francophone heritage (parents who come from Cameroon, Senegal, and Haiti), and being able to help them make connections to their heritage is important to me. Allowing students to discover people and places, and languages and music that includes millions of French speakers from around the world is one way to not just meet my standards for World Languages but to show them that all perspectives, practices, and products are valuable and that one can use French outside of France.

My project is bringing in books that include biographies, stories, tales, and historical narratives from the First Nations peoples of Canada, to the historical leaders of Benin and Morocco, to modern-day athletes, writers, and musicians from Viet-Nam, Belgium, Madagascar, and French Guyana to name a few.

I have also requested bulletin boards to display images, flags, and other information about each country we will learn about. The map of the French-speaking world is in FRENCH to support learning nouns in the target language. The book cart will hold the books that I have requested to start my small classroom library.
