Diversity in Music

Help me give my students diverse stories to help them connect with all styles of music.

My Students

I teach just under 500 students at least once a week for 50 minutes. Even though some may be shy, within minutes I have every student participating through singing, movement, and instrument playing. I help make the music accessible to all my students.

Now that we are distance learning, it has become so clear that my students do not always have the supplies they need to be successful at home.

My students need basic school supplies but would love supplies that help enhance their learning. It has been difficult to teach my students online, and I am hoping to help them make more music at home with their families.

I believe that music is the universal language. My students are able to communicate without words. Everyone is able to be successful in my classroom and, with your help, they can create, dance, and play even more!

My Project

So often, my class books star white composers. I want to expose my students to real stories about people of all backgrounds and how they were influenced by the music around them. I want my students to hear these stories about people like them.

I want my students to look at the pictures and see characters and people who look like them.

I teach in an urban community and I want to inspire my students. I want them to connect with music on a deeper level than just having fun singing and dancing. I want to grow their love and appreciation for all music. Many of these books are a great jumping-off point for looking at different styles of music and will inspire great hands-on creative projects.
