I teach in a title I school in Brooklyn, NY. My students are creative, kind, and enthusiastic about learning. They come from diverse backgrounds and speak a variety of languages, hence we have a very high English as a Second Language population. My students try their best even in difficult situations especially this year. This pandemic has made learning difficult for them due to many unforeseen circumstances. They are learning to use technology they never had before and navigate new learning platforms. Even though it's a challenge, they are still attempting to show up and learn.
We are an ICT classroom and my students need all the resources possible, including a variety of ways to learn and practice reading skills.
Lessons will have to be adjusted to reach all students' base of knowledge and understanding. They will require many different scaffolds to learn including books at a variety of reading levels.
My Project
My school as well as my classroom is full of amazingly diverse students that come from all over the world. The diverse series book that I am requesting will help create a more diverse library in my classroom. Many students pick up different books to read but often cannot find books that mirror their culture. I want to support my students in giving them books that they can relate to.
I would also love to use these diverse series books during our read aloud periods to spark great conversations and bring about excitement towards reading.
