Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our elementary school is located in southern Houston, Texas. We serve almost 500 PK-4th grade students from low income and multicultural/bilingual homes. We have also added several new foster families to our school family this year. Our community is tight-knit, and we are extremely fortunate to be strongly supported by our families and local businesses. Our school family is highly invested in local charity and volunteer work in the community.

My job as school librarian is to help students, teachers, and family members find it, read it, and do it - in a physically and emotionally safe and welcoming space.

The mission of our library program is to enable students, staff, and community members to seek and use information and to develop a love of reading by providing reading materials, collaborating with classroom teachers and community partners, promoting reading with book clubs and contests, and advocating for our library and school.

My Project

Our school family is quickly changing and our students now come from homes of all backgrounds. Please help me provide books that reflect our students' biological, foster, and adoptive families. I want our library collection to truly reflect our school community so everyone feels welcome here.

I have chosen diverse books: traditional and non-traditional families, families with one race as well as bi-racial and multi-racial families, single parent homes, and more.

I have also chosen books in English, Spanish, and bilingual books with both languages. These books vary from board books for our Pre-Kindergartners to chapter books for our upper elementary readers. The more students relate to the books, the more engaged they are. The more engaged they are, the better readers they become. #ISeeMe
