My Students
I teach an amazing group of students in the promise zone of the West Philadelphia area. I'm so privileged to teach a mixture of students. I teach students who have learning disabilities who are just learning how to read as well as gifted students who all love to read. I love their enthusiasm when it's time to read and listening to the conversations that they have while reading. They also love being hands-on and being able to conduct different science experience and play math games. The joy that comes from watching one of your struggling students pick up on something and being involved is always a plus. They are a very talented bunch and are rising to the academic challenges that I place before them every day, as well as demonstrating their talents in other extracurricular activities such as art, music, and dance. They have worked really hard everyday and have overcome a lot over the last two years.
My Project
I teach a great group of African American students who enjoy reading. I would love for them to see people who look like them who have faced challenges, overcome obstacles, and made a difference in the world with the main character that looks like them. With my students reading these kinds of books it becomes a means of self-affirmation. We know that kids enjoy reading titles with characters who look like them as it helps them to identify with the characters in a story which helps them to comprehend the text because they are making those self connections.
